About Oral Mucositis
Oral mucositis is the chronic irritation of the gums resulting in an altered ability to eat, drink, and function normally.

The oral rash generally presents as a generalized sensitivity, burning, or itching of the mouth. This can affect the gums, cheeks, lips, and/or tongue. There are multiple categories of oral mucositis, including: Oral Lichen Plans, Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid, and Pemphigus Vulgaris. These entities are differentiated based on a soft tissue biopsy, which is read under a microscope to make a definitive diagnosis.
As periodontists, we are well versed in the identification, biopsy, and management of all forms of oral mucositis. In addition, we perform other types of hard and soft tissue biopsies of irregular or abnormal soft tissues of the gums.
