About Peri-Implant Disease
Dental implants may develop complications that require more advanced treatment for their longterm stability and success. As periodontists, we are uniquely qualified to manage peri-implant issues, including gum disease and recession around dental implants.
Causes
Dental implants are susceptible to multiple complications. Peri-implant Mucositis is the inflammation of the soft tissues supporting the implant. Peri-Implantitis is deterioration of the gum and bone that support a dental implant, essentially gum disease at an implant. Both of these diseases can affect the longevity and normal function of a dental implant and require treatment, which may involve special cleanings, periodontal flap surgery (gum surgery), and/or bone grafting. On some occasions, an implant may require explantation, or removal, due to the severity of the complications involved.
Treatment
Gingival recession, or the receding gumline, can also affect dental implants. This can be treated with soft tissue grafting procedures. As periodontists, we are often referred patients who need this type of surgery for management of implant complications.
