Crown lengthening is a procedure which may be requested by your dentist in order to create more space for a future crown or “cap” on the tooth. The procedure involves the surgical access of the gum and bone supporting a tooth in teeth with deep cavities or fractures below the gumline, thus providing a stronger foundation for a new crown. This procedure is performed by a periodontist with the goal of saving the tooth as well as enhancing the predictability and long-term stability of the crown restoration.
