Soft tissue grafting encompasses a group of procedures that are used to treat gum recession. These treatments are known as a free gingival graft, connective tissue graft, or Alloderm (donor) graft, and are tailored to each individual’s needs – both root coverage and reestablishment of healthy supporting gum tissues are outcomes of these procedures. As periodontists, we are often referred patients who need this type of surgery for management of gingival recession defects.

How does the treatment work?
The tissue used in periodontal grafting procedures may come from the hard palate (the roof of the mouth) or from donated tissue from another person, which has been medically processed to make it safe to use (Alloderm). The tissue is then transplanted to the area of the mouth that requires treatment.
